Psychotherapy Research

The research group of the competence center CBASP at the University Hospital Bonn has been in existence since 2006 and offers early and differential diagnosis of affective disorders as well as the specific psychotherapeutic treatment of persistent depressive disorder in a multiprofessional team of psychiatrists, psychotherapists and scientists.

The term persistent depressive disorder refers to long-term problems in the control of resigning thoughts and feelings, which disturb an effective confrontation with the environment. Developmental psychologically, helplessness experiences characterise the life history of those affected. Learned helplessness puts the hazard detection system for interpersonal situations into permanent alert and behaviour patterns of avoidance arise. The resulting disturbance of the person * environmental interaction favours the appearance of prolonged depressed thoughts, feelings and drive disorders (depressive episodes). The longer-lasting depression, which is usually characterized by an incomplete regeneration of depressive symptoms between depressive episodes, is less common.

The treatment of persistent depressive disorder is done here according to the latest standards and includes the specific psychotherapy with the CBASP in cooperation with the Cologne practice of Dr. Redeck, as well as drug offers for those affected by a level approach developed at the UKB. In addition, scientific research on the improvement of diagnostics and therapy on neurobiological and theoretical basis is taking place at the competence center CBASP. It is of particular interest to us whether and how the used psychotherapeutic techniques lead the learning processes that arise during psychotherapy with the CBASP to a more sustainable efficacy. We focus our attention especially on the technique of psychotherapeutic interventions and the way in which the therapist can design the therapy situation so that the patient is able to learn more often what he wants and what is realistic. This makes it possible for those affected to benefit from the latest diagnostic findings and therapeutic procedures.

The competence center CBASP is scientifically located within the University Hospital with clinical working groups from the Center for Economics and Neuroscience (ms. I. Serbanescu and Prof. B. Weber), medical psychology, also associated with the working group for the treatment of refractive affective discorders and is integrated into emerging supraregional research networks. Funding will be provided by the German Research Foundation (dfg) and the company Lundbeck, among others. Our most important external cooperation partners are Prof. Dr. JP McCullough, Ms. Prof. JK Penberthy, Prof. Dr. Dr. H. Walter, Mr. PRIV. Doz. Dr. K. Schnell, Prof. Dr. E. Schramm, Prof. Dr. C. Normann, Prof. Dr. H. Kessler, Prof. Dr. J. Krajewski, and Mr. Dr. P. Neudeck.
