Non-coding RNA and Systems Biology
We also discovered that small non-coding RNAs, so-called miRNAs, are dynamically regulated depending on light adaptation in the retina (Krol et al. 2010). Furthermore, we found two miRNA molecules to be essential for maintaining photoreceptors light-sensitive (Busskamp et al. 2014). We employed advanced gene regulatory network analyses to decode their mode of action in stem-cell-derived neurons (Kutsche et al. 2018). In the future, we aim to harness the regulatory impacts of miRNAs to preserve visual functions in retinal diseases.
