Institute for Patient Safety

Patientensicherheit WortwolkeThe Institute for Patient Safety (IfPS) is the first in Germany explicitly dedicated to research and teaching of patient safety. The institute began its activities on January 1, 2009, and was supported until 2017 by an endowed professorship from the German Coalition for Patient Safety (Aktionsbündnis Patientensicherheit e.V., APS).
The interdisciplinary team consists of psychologists, physicians, nurses and health researchers.

Presentation by Yannick Blum As part of the GQMG Annual Conference 2026 on March 12 and 13  at the University Hospital of Cologne “Strategic involvement of patient advisory boards in care processes: An intervention to promote quality and safety” As part of the GQMG Annual Conference 2026, this presentation focuses on the strategic role of patient advisory boards in quality and safety management. Using a specific intervention project as an example, it shows how patient participation can be integrated into care processes in a structured, effective, and sustainable manner. Patient safety remains one of the key challenges in the German healthcare system. At the same time, one crucial lever is often not yet being used systematically: the active involvement of patient advisory boards. The PEPS project analyzed the needs of patient advisory boards and healthcare facilities and developed the “Partners for Patient Safety” (P4PS) program, a multimodal intervention to strengthen cooperation. Insight into the PEPS project and the “Partners for Patient Safety” (P4PS) program  Findings on acceptance, feasibility, and competence development Concrete recommendations for action for institutions, patient advisory boards, and system actors Impulses for the strategic anchoring of patient participation in quality and safety management
