Clinical trials

New active compounds must be tested extensively to guarantee the efficacy, safety and security of new medications. This is done within the framework of clinical trials. Clinical trials are essential to improve medical care.

Patients who take part in such studies have the chance to be treated with innovative therapies earlier than others. Clinical trials are subject to clear legal regulations. All studies conducted in Germany must be approved by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) or the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI). Both authorities are subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Health. In addition, these studies must be approved by the competent ethics committee.

Further information on clinical trials can be found on the website of the VfA (Association of Research-based Pharmaceutical Companies) and on our FAQ-website

Covimmune-Clin FlyerStudy: COVIMMUNE-Clin

Study title: Long-term effects of COVID-19 on pulmonary and neurocognitive disorders

DRKS-ID: DRKS00023806

Background:

Different reports suggest that an infection with SARS-CoV-2 can lead not only to damage to the lungs, but in rare cases also to permanent damage to the nervous system. Attention problems, memory or word finding disorders as well as lung damage and symptoms of fatigue are reported, among other things.

In order to research this further, we are investigating the possible effects and long-term consequences of an infection with SARS-CoV-2 on the nervous system, cognitive performance and the lungs as part of the “COVIMMUNE-Clin” study funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Participation:

We are looking for participants between 25 and 75 years with an asymptomatic (SARS-CoV-2 positive) and severe disease course (hospital stay) as well as healthy participants as a control group, who will be examined at three measurement times at the beginning, after 6 and after 12 months.

Course of the study:

Cognitive performance (e.g. memory and attention), lung function, brain structure using an MRI and blood samples taken on the days of the examination are examined. The entire examinations will take approximately 5-6 hours to complete.

Start: March 2021
