About us
The duties of the Department of Epileptology are clearly defined: optimally diagnosing and treating patients with epilepsy and other seizure-like disorders, and researching epilepsy and the functions of the human brain, such as memory and emotion.
The well-being of the patient is the central guiding principle of our Department; seizure control and improvement in quality of life are the primary goals.
The Department offers our patients an environment in which all aspects of their disease can be intensively examined and taken into consideration for optimal treatment. This requires a complex interaction among several workgroups within the Department and also close cooperation with other Departments, such as Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology.
Here, internationally renowned scientific workgroups address a wide range of issues relating to epilepsy.
Through academic teaching as well as active participation in medical and professional training, we help ensure that patients can experience high-quality diagnostic testing and treatment, even outside of special epilepsy centers. We also feel a special obligation to better inform the public with regard to epilepsy’s disease pattern through active public relations work.

The Department of Epileptology in Bonn was founded in 1979 as a special clinic for the treatment and research of epilepsy. At the same time, the only German chair for epileptology was established here for many decades. Together with the Departments of Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery Departments as well as the Institute of Neuropathology, the Department of Epileptology is now part of the Centre for Neurology at the University Hospital Bonn. In close cooperation with our Department of Neurosurgery, one of the world's largest epilepsy centres was built here. The Department of Epileptology moved to the new building premisis in September of 2000.
The founding Director, Prof. Dr. Heinz Penin (1924-2020) was named as the first Professor for Epileptology in August 1979. From 1990 until March 2019, the Department was headed by Prof. Dr. Christian Elger. As of April 2019, Prof. Dr. Rainer Surges is the Chair of the University Professorship for Epileptology as well as the Director of the Department of Epileptology.
