5. Otto Löwenstein Symposium

Saturday, November 16, 2024

09:00 - 15:45

Dear colleagues,
Dear scientists,

With great pleasure, we would like to invite you to the fifth Otto Löwenstein Symposium at the Bonn University Club. In addition to this small anniversary celebration, we would also like to pay tribute to Prof. Heinz Penin, the Founder and first Director of the Department of Epileptlogy, who was born 100 years ago in November.

In his honor, the Heinz Penin Prize for Epilepsy Research will be awarded for the first time this year. This prize will be awarded now and in the future to the best young scientific work from Bonn in the two fields of experimental and clinical epilepsy research. The prize winners will be presented with 1000 € for personal use. The award winners will be announced at the Otto Löwenstein Symposium and they will then briefly present their work during the Penin Lecture.

Following the award ceremony, Professor Dr. Surges will report on new possibilities for diagnosis and treatment at the Bonn Epilepsy Center. Dr. Borger from the Department of Neurosurgery will then present a lecture reviewing 40 years of epilepsy surgery in Bonn. Professor Dr. Rémi from Munich will then report on the guideline-based treatment of status epilepticus. The first part will end with a lecture presented by Professor Dr. Tomson from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on risks and injuries in epilepsy.

After the lunch break, Professor Dr. Knake from the Epilepsy Center Marburg will report on the new guidelines for the first epileptic seizure. Professor Dr. Pressler from Great Ormond Street Hospital London will then explain the importance of EEG and semiology in early childhood epilepsy. Tips on emergency medication and monitoring devices will then be presented by Dr. Baumgartner from our Department of Epileptology and Dr. Fazeli from the Bonn Department of Neuropaediatrics.

After the coffee break, we will discuss instructive everyday cases with you in an entertaining manner. We hope to have put together a practical and exciting program for you again this year and look forward to your participation and a lively exchange!

Kind regards from the University Hospital Bonn,

Prof. Dr. Rainer Surges
Prof. Dr. Alexandra Klotz
Prof. Dr. Hartmut Vatter
