Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Björn Krüger

Head of Working Group

Tel.: +49 228 287-51704

Björn Krüger studied computer science, mathematics, and physics at Bonn University. He received his Master's in computer science (Dipl.-Inform.) in 2006 and his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in computer science in 2012. From 2012 to 2015, he worked as a postdoc at Bonn University. In 2015, he joined Gokhale Method Enterprise Inc. (Stanford, CA) as the Director of Research and Product Development, where he led the development of wearable devices to monitor the user's posture. Returning to academia, he moved to TH Köln as a Professor for "Distributed Media Applications and Technologies" in 2022. Since 2023, he has been a Professor for "Personalized Digital Health and Telemedicine" in Bonn.

The working group focuses on a wide range of technologies for capturing human data, including movement and vital parameters. Our aim is to identify patterns and analyze the data, while developing methods that are independent of the specific sensor technology used for data capture. This allows us to analyze movements captured through various means, such as video cameras, accelerometers (found in smartphones and smartwatches), or EMG sensors. Our main areas of focus are:

Wearables (wearable sensors): We are developing hardware capable of robustly measuring specific parameters to detect disease patterns and events, such as epileptic seizures, using smaller and more powerful sensor technology in wearable form.

Contactless measurement: By utilizing data from video, depth, and thermal imaging cameras, we can determine body poses and movements. We are also researching techniques to derive vital signs from this type of data.

Data analysis and visualization: The collected data requires thorough analysis. Therefore, we are developing statistical methods, algorithms, and software tools to aid in this process. Additionally, we are exploring methods to effectively visualize the data and analyses for different user types.

Networking, data protection and security: Given the sensitive health data involved in the aforementioned areas, we are working on technologies that ensure secure transfer and processing of this data, prioritizing data privacy and security.
