The group’s research focuses on the etiology and preclinical detection of eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and keratoconus. By integrating clinical expertise with molecular deep phenotyping, genetic epidemiology and advanced high-resolution imaging of the eye and brain the group aims to characterize early structural and molecular alterations along the pathophysiological continuum of ocular disease. A central goal is to establish a biologically grounded framework for precision patient stratification and the development of targeted therapeutic strategies.

Dr Larsen is a clinician-scientist and ophthalmologist at the University Eye Hospital Bonn and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. She studied medicine at Heidelberg University and completed research training at the University of Chicago and the Université de Bordeaux, where she also obtained her PhD and completed postdoctoral training.
