History
The institute library was founded in 1905 under the then director Prof. Dr. D. Finkler set up as a scientific reference library. It has undergone significant developments in recent years.
In 1996 it separated from the Medical Microbiology Library by moving to the ground floor of the former director's residence (Thofernhaus). On the occasion of the move, the position of a student assistant was created using third-party funds. This has significantly expanded the range of services.
The library was greatly enriched by the legacy of Prof. Thofern, who headed the Bonn Hygiene Institute from 1971 to 1994. Large parts of his scientific private library, especially from the area of his work on water hygiene, were stored in the library.
Today the reference library includes over 4,000 monographs and 32 series of publications, as well as doctorates and dissertations that emerged from the institute.
Through the constant inclusion of current literature, the library has grown into a preventative medicine information center.
