The Special Outpatient Clinic for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders at the Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy is available as a central point of contact for people seeking treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorders(OCD). They are supervised by our interdisciplinary team of doctors and psychologists. Our range of treatments is based on current and scientifically based guidelines.
Treatment offer for people with obsessive compulsive disorder
On the basis of extensive diagnostics, we inform and advise on the appropriate outpatient-, partial- and fully in-patient-treatment options in our clinic. The special outpatient clinic offers the following treatment options for outpatient patients:
Diagnosis
A well-founded diagnosis of the obsessive-compulsive disorder and possible accompanying illnesses form the basis for optimal treatment planning.
Behavioral therapy
In our special outpatient clinic for people with obsessive-compulsive disorders, we offer outpatient therapy groups with a cognitive-behavioural therapy orientation and a total of 25 weekly sessions (Wed., 15:00-17:00 and Thurs., 16:00-18:00). In the first five sessions, the basics are taught, causes and maintaining mechanisms of the disorder are discussed, goals are defined and together we deduce how compulsions can be treated most effectively. A broad study base shows that exposures with response management are the most important methodological approach in the therapy of obsessive-compulsive disorders. The aim of the exposures is to consciously seek out situations that would usually trigger compulsions, but not to carry out the established compulsive behaviour, but to learn to functionally and sustainably manage unpleasant feelings that arise. The main focus of group therapy is accordingly to carry out exposures on the spot and to discuss them in detail before and after in the form of "homework". The exchange with other affected persons is often experienced as motivating and relieving. In order to offer a protected treatment framework, the group setting is closed. It is possible to start a new group cycle every 6 months.
Medications
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have proven to be effective in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The exact medication can be discussed and planned in a detailed consultation with the doctor.
Support for family members
Relatives and helpers of people with OCD often experience a strong uncertainty in dealing with the disorder. This is often accompanied by severe suffering. At regular intervals we invite to an event for relatives. Basic knowledge about the emergence of OCD and recommendations for dealing with affected persons is presented. There is plenty of room for your own questions and personal examples.
