Do you have emotional instability or borderline personality disorder?

We are currently looking for interested individuals to participate in a scientific study at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Hospital Bonn. 

The study will examine how physical activity affects stress and emotion processing, cognitive functions, and biological factors (e.g., stress hormones, heart rate) – especially in people with emotional instability or symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD).

Who is the study suitable for?

For the study, we are looking for individuals 

  • between the ages of 16 and 60 
  • with emotional instability (e.g., borderline personality disorder)
  • with normal or corrected vision
  • with sufficient German language skills (at least B2)

Exclusion criteria for participation are: 

  • Presence of one of the following mental disorders: psychosis or schizophrenia, substance dependence with current withdrawal symptoms, bipolar disorders
  • Neurological diseases (e.g., epilepsy, MS) or history of brain injury
  • Severe cardiovascular problems
  • Endocrine diseases (e.g., hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus)
  • Pregnancy

The participation criteria will be clarified again by our study team as part of a detailed preliminary examination.

What can I expect?

Participation includes 3 appointments (each lasting approx. 3–4 hours):

1st appointment

  • Clinically structured interview
  • Sports tests to assess fitness (VO2max in maximum exercise test)

2nd and 3rd appointments

  • Cycling on an ergometer or watching films 
  • Submission of saliva and optional blood samples
  • Performance of a standardized stress test
  • Performance of a neuropsychological task
  • Completion of various questionnaires

What do you gain from participating?

In addition to your important contribution to research, you will receive an expense allowance of €10 per hour, free performance diagnostics for general fitness, and the results of the study.
