Research Interest
The Experimental Psychopathology Working Group conducts empirical research into mental illnesses - particularly schizophrenia and other psychoses - using behavioral, cognitive science, and phenomenological methods.
The aim is to gain a better understanding of the subjective and cognitive foundations of psychopathological phenomena and to contribute to the further development of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
The focus is on:
- Changes in perception, cognition, time processing, and self-reference
- Subjective dimensions of experience of mental disorders from a phenomenological perspective
- The combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches
- Participatory research, i.e., the active involvement of those affected in the design and implementation of research
Our working group conducts both clinical-experimental studies with patients and controlled comparative studies with healthy subjects. Current areas of focus include:
- Investigation of time perception in individuals with psychotic symptoms
- Cognitive foundations of delusions and ego disorders
- Psychophysical studies on auditory and visual perception
- Studies on decision-making and metacognition
- Participation in multicenter research projects in the field of early detection
There is also the possibility of participating in studies within the framework of the affiliated clinical outpatient clinics
The working group pursues a pluralistic methodological approach that integrates various research logics and methodological systems:
- Cognitive psychology experiments (e.g. reaction time measurement, decision tests, attention experiments)
- Phenomenologically based qualitative interviews
- Self-report procedures and standardized scales
- Exploratory and hypothesis-testing designs
- Participatory research formats (e.g., stakeholder advisory boards, co-research)
