Background
Patient safety is an essential parameter of high-quality health care. Physicians and nurses take a relevant and central role in the field of patient safety and error management. They need safety skills, they need to be able to recognize patient safety incidents, work in a team, learn from errors and use problem-solving and practice development skills. Recently, the importance of safety performance and safety skills has become clear and more evident.
Objective
The overall aim of SPOHC is to gain knowledge about safety performance of healthcare professionals, to get an inside view of current practice in German hospitals and to evaluate how the practice differs between different professions.
To achieve this aim
a) we developed, tested and validated situational judgement test which measure safety performance of healthcare professionals,
b) we translated, tested and validated the adapted Workplace Health & Safety instrument, which measures the constructs safety knowledge, safety motivation, safety compliance and safety participation and
c) we explored the perceptions of healthcare professionals through expert interviews and how they define safety performance.
Design
Cross-sectional survey and expert interviews.
