The major scientific interests of our group focus on the neuropathological basis of epilepsies. Seizure attacks frequently have their origin in circumscribed areas of the brain. Often, epileptic seizure are pharmacoresistant. By neurosurgical removal of the epileptogenic focus, seizures can be controlled in many patients. Respective neurosurgical biopsies represent a unique prerequisite for molecular-pathological approaches in order to provide an improved understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis to develop improved treatment stategies.
Scientific foci
• Acquired ion channelopathies in temporal lobe epilepsy.
• Transcriptional control mechanisms in epileptogenesis.
• Role of microglia in epilepsy-associated neurodegeneration.
• Molecular pathology of glioneuronal malformations and tumors.
Education
We offer positions for medical, master and PhD students. There is the opportunity to learn a large variety of molecular and neuropathological methods and approaches and to have interaction with international partner laboratories.
